Pianist Mervin Tay

Mervin Tay, grew up in Singapore. While studying in Singapore, Mervin won a nation-wide audition to attend the International Music Camp at the International Peace Garden, North Dakota, in 2002. In his home country, Mervin played with the Philharmonic Orchestra, Singapore Armed Forces Bands, a founding member of the Just Brass Ensemble that encourages young aspiring musicians to participate in chamber ensembles, and coached and prepared numerous bands for overseas tours and competitions.

Mervin has completed his second masters in Orchestra and Opera Conducting, studying with Dr. Jonathan Shames. He held an assistantship at the University of Oklahoma that entails conducting opera rehearsals, and performing as assistant conductor for the OU Symphony and OU Opera productions. Presently, Mervin is the Music Director of the OU Civic Orchestra that has performed two successful concerts under his directions.

Mervin holds a Bachelor of Musical Arts in Trumpet Performance and Music technology and Master of Music degree in Trumpet Performance from the University of Oklahoma. He studied with Dr. Karl Sievers, principal trumpet with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra, Dr. Jacob Larson (Trumpet) and Dr. Konstantinos Karathanasis (Music Technology). He has performed in the Schizophonic Brass Quintet, soloist in the OU Jazz Bands, OU trumpet ensemble, served as principal in the OU Wind Symphony and OU Symphony Orchestra and freelance musician with musical theatres and churches in the Norman and Oklahoma City areas.

In his leisure time, Mervin is an active music arranger and composer. His works have been performed by the Oklahoma Brass Quintet, Norman Philharmonic, Schizophonic Brass Quintet, wind and chamber ensembles at the University of Oklahoma, Lyric Theatre Oklahoma, Cimarron Opera Company, Poteet Theatre and by many others.

In the summer, Mervin fulfills his passion for teaching while working as assistance-music director at the annual Cimarron Opera Youth Summer Camp. This camp gives him the opportunity to work with vocalists and choreographers as well as to hone in on his piano skills.
